Journey to Sitecore 8.1: An upgrade story

I've decided to use my blog as a way for others to follow along with me as I tackle the upgrade from Sitecore 7.1 to Sitecore 8.1. Along the way I plan to talk about the decisions made: xDB vs on-premise, integrating social connect, personalization make-over to my website, and more. I'll talk about what worked and what didn't. Hopefully this series will help those who brave the path to Sitecore 8.1 so my pain will not be in vain.

I'm currently reviewing the 8.1 options for xDB so expect a blog post soon in regards to that decision. My plans are to kickoff upgrade of Sitecore by Thanksgiving. Between now and then, I'll be making decisions for how to implement the new version. Stay tuned! My hopes are that the upgrade goes smoothly and I don't end up like this guy below.

  3. Yes, I've already migrated all of my websites code over to work on Sitecore 8.1. I have them all running on an under powered all-in-one VM at the moment. I've hit several delays but largely due to getting the proper person to sign off on cloud xDB and massive delays in getting the new hardware setup. I hope to post a follow up blog shortly.
